What is perlite?
Perlite undergoes a fascinating transformation from obsidian rock to the tiny white specks we are familiar with. This process involves heating the rock to temperatures of 850-900°C, causing it to soften and expand more than ten times its original volume. The expanded perlite is teeming with minuscule air pockets, making it lightweight, sterile, and resistant to compaction.
Types of perlite

- Super Coarse Perlite: With particles between ¼ and 3/32”, this type has a water-holding capacity of 19%. It provides excellent porosity for drainage and aeration, although its larger size makes it less common in gardening.
- Coarse Perlite: This all-purpose grade ranges in size between 3/16 and 3/64” and has a 34% water-holding capacity. It works best for succulents and orchids due to its balance between drainage and water retention.
- Medium Grade Perlite: Falling between coarse and fine grades, this perlite ranges in size between ⅛” and 1/32” and holds 46% water. It’s perfect for potted plants and seedlings or as an ingredient in potting mixes.
- Fine Grade Perlite: The smallest of the grades, fine perlite has particles between 1/16 and 1/128” and a water-holding capacity of 52%. It’s ideal for rooting cuttings and starting seeds.
